Loan Deferments
Students whose education is financed in whole or in part by a guaranteed loan have in the past required the University Registrar to certify quarterly enrollment to the lending agencies in order to defer repayment. In Autumn Quarter 2002, the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) was designated as the agent of this certification process by the University of Chicago.
Beginning with the first day of each quarter and repeated on the fourth and eighth Monday of the quarter, data on registered students are sent electronically to NSC. Among the data sent for each student are current enrollment, status, start date, and anticipated date of graduation. Since lending agencies base repayment scheduling on the expected date of completion, it is vital that the student keep these data accurate, especially the anticipated date of graduation.
The information sent to the National Student Clearinghouse is then reported to the lending agencies for deferment of the student loan. Students are able to view account information on file for them at the following URL: http://www.studentclearinghouse.org.
