Holds

Students who have been placed on hold will not be able to register for courses nor access University services and facilities until their financial obligations or compliance with rules and regulations have been fulfilled. Notices of holds are issued via the “My Alerts” pagelet in my.UChicago as much in advance as possible. Students should contact the administrative or academic office that issued the hold in order to have it cleared. For more information, please refer to the Student Manual.

*  Spring-to-Autumn Quarter Exception: Students are expected to begin the academic year with a zero balance.  The College Dean of Students Office will not allow autumn quarter registration for students who have failed to resolve a balance greater than $1,000 of any Spring Quarter by Labor Day. Students should remember that there is a delay between when the restricting office clears the hold and when their registration eligibility is restored.  If a student clears their hold by Thursday of week 3 they may register for classes as normal.

**  For example, if a student has a hold in Autumn, but clears the hold in week 5 of Winter, they may be allowed register for Spring Quarter with approval from the College Dean of Students.  The student will not be allowed to register for Winter.

*** For example, if a student has a hold in Autumn Quarter, but doesn’t clear their hold by the end of Winter Quarter, they will no longer be an active student at the University.

Restoring Enrollment Status

When the hold is cleared, the next step for registration will depend on several factors, such as the length of time of the hold and specific policies in each academic unit. Students may register during the add/drop periods if the hold is cleared in the quarter in which the hold was placed or before the end of the third week of the following quarter.  In all other cases, students should contact the area Dean of Students Office.

Notification of holds are posted on the “My Alerts” portlet of my.UChicago. Students are responsible for regularly checking their alert status and contacting the restricting office as soon as possible to resolve the matter.  In addition to the notification on the portal, students will receive an email communication from the restricting office.  The frequency of these communications will vary depending on the office. The Office of the University Registrar also sends email notifications to students during key registration periods.  Students who receive these emails are responsible for clearing the hold as soon as possible as the hold may interfere with the ability to pre-register or register for classes.

For additional questions or clarifications, please contact the Office of the University Registrar at registrar@uchicago.edu or call 773.702.7891.
